If we can thank COVID-19 for one thing, it’s the fact that many animals in need found happy and healthy homes. Over the last year and a half, we saw a huge increase in pet purchases and adoptions as people were in need of that perfect work from home companion.

As the world and the possibility to travel opens up again, we are also seeing an increase in the number of companies creating opportunities for corporate relocations. Corporate travel packages have become a necessary and important component for successful moves and they contain a wide array of benefits from things like a packing service to temporary housing, but have you spared a thought for the family pet?

Permitting employees to choose pet relocation services as part of their benefits package, will ultimately improve the quality of life for employees, families and in turn, the company.

Adding Pets to the Move Mix

With a large majority of households around the world owning a pet, there is a high likelihood that relocating an employee will include a pet move as well. The key to a successful corporate relocation is to start planning early, and don’t push pets off to be the last thought.

For many people, their pet is one of the most important members of their family, so leaving them behind or boarding them is not an option. Embracing pets can be a good way to show employees that you care and can ultimately help you attract new talent.

Pet relocation benefits not only help employers support their employees as they adjust to their new lifestyle in their new home and workplace, but they also help retain strong performers in the long run.

UPDATE – Pets with valid US rabies certificates can bypass the CDC Import process.

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately traveling into the United States with your pet just got a bit more difficult. The United States has made the decision to ban the importation of dogs from over 100 countries due to the large increase in the number of puppies being imported into the country over the last year with false rabies vaccinations certificates.

Pandemic puppies were all the rage during quarantine as people sought companionship, and when shelters were running out of puppies for people to adopt, they turned to dog importations instead. According to the CDC, in 2020 they discovered more than 450 pets arriving in the United States with fake or falsified rabies documents, which equates to a 52% increase over the last few years.

Rabies is fatal in both humans and animals, and the importation of even one infected dog could result in transmission to humans, pets, and other wildlife.

Updated Airline Restrictions

What It Says

Until Jan. 7, 2022, dogs coming from countries deemed high risk can enter the United States in 18 airports, including O’Hare Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. After Jan. 7, dogs coming from high-risk countries with CDC Dog Import Permits must enter only at approved ports of entry, including just three airports in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta. All dogs imported into the U.S. must be healthy upon arrival.

UPDATE: Effective December 1, 2021, all dogs that have been in a high-risk country in the past 6 months may only enter the United States through an approved port of entry, which includes all 18 airports with a CDC quarantine station: Anchorage (ANC), Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Detroit (DTW), Honolulu (HNL), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), Minneapolis (MSP), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Philadelphia (PHL), San Francisco (SFO), San Juan (SJU), Seattle (SEA), and Washington DC (IAD).

Talks of these new updated airline restrictions began in July and have now officially gone into full effect on October 14th. The ban applies to foreign dogs as well as dogs traveling with American owners and re-entering the country after a trip in a country abroad.

Dogs that have not been in a high-risk country in the previous six months are not required by CDC to present a rabies vaccination certificate or other paperwork, but most airlines will require a rabies vaccination certificate or health certificate. Once the dog is in the US, the state in which it resides will govern its rabies vaccination requirement. The majority of states require rabies vaccination by 3 to 4 months of age.

They have begun issuing small numbers of permits to dogs coming to the United States from certain high-risk countries, but the requirements are steep, permits require microchipping, and there are several other hoops you’ll have to jump through.

Swift Air Shippers Can Help

Before these new CDC bans, the United States was a relatively easy location for pet travel. There are hundreds of details to take into account when you and your pet are traveling internationally and especially now if you are attempting to reenter the United States. At Swift Air Shippers, we have pet transportation specialists that can assist you and coordinate customized pet travel arrangements that fit you and your pets’ specific needs. Dogs have a natural ability to love unconditionally and be true life companions. But, if owning a dog is so great, why doesn’t everyone have one?

Making the decision to bring a new dog into your life is a big step to take, and there are several key factors to consider before making any major decisions or commitments.

As pet parents, we should do our best to give our furry friends every opportunity to grow and thrive in a safe and loving environment, so you will want to consider things like care, training, cost, size, breed, and so much more.

COST AND CARE

First things first, are you ready to financially support and care for a dog?

After any initial cost or adoption fees, you will need to invest a decent amount of money towards your furry friend throughout their entire lifetime. Some of the things that will continuously come up later down the road include:

  • Food
  • Training
  • Veterinarian Costs
  • Toys and Accessories
  • Yard Maintenance

Every dog will require a different amount of care and attention, so you will want to be sure to think through these things thoroughly before considering a particular dog breed.

DOG BREED FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Most people have a breed or two that they prefer, but your family size and living situation are key in determining what would work best for you or your family.

Size

Are you more of a smaller lap dog person, or do you have your heart set on a huge hound?

Small or toy-sized dog breeds like chihuahuas or smaller terriers are convenient to carry but can also be delicate and vulnerable. Smaller dogs may not necessarily be ideal for a family with smaller children that can squeeze and kick.

Large dogs, on the other hand, need a bit more space to move around in order to avoid injury to themselves or damage to the household, so big breed dogs are not ideal for smaller apartments and condos. Another key factor to consider here is that the bigger the dog, the more expensive things like food, supplies, and grooming become.

Exercise Needs

Every dog needs routine exercise, so you need to be able to commit to that, however, a dog’s activity level is often determined by their breed, so some dogs will have more energy than others.

If you can commit to 1-2 walks a day, you should consider a lower energy dog like a Basset Hound, whereas if you are looking for a dog to be your new jogging partner, you might want to consider a breed like a Border Collie.

You need to be willing to adjust the amount of exercise and attention you give to your dog so that they don’t end up barking consistently, digging up the yard, destroying your home, or doing anything else to act out.

Grooming Requirements

Those fluffy and scruffy dogs are the most adorable breeds…. until it comes to shedding and grooming. Large or small, long or short, your dog will shed. There are certain breeds, however, that shed less than others.

Long-haired dog breeds like collies and poodles have a fluffy coat that requires frequent grooming sessions to keep tamed, but if you are not looking to spend a ton of money on grooming, you might want to consider a short-haired breed such as a Beagle or Dachshund. You may even want to consider a hypoallergenic pet breed like Schnauzers and Yorkies.

Lifespan

One of the harder factors to take into consideration before becoming a dog owner is how long they will be a part of your family. Some breeds have a lifespan of seven years, while others can go on to live for 18 or even 20 years. Whether you are looking for a puppy, an adult dog, or a senior dog, they will need daily care for the rest of their lives.

Dog’s are called man’s best friend for a reason. If you’re looking for a furry companion of your own, we recommend that you thoroughly research the breeder or rescue organization. Then, you can contact us to help you get your fur baby home!

Some areas make better places for dogs to live than others.

The United Kingdom is full of energetic and exciting towns and cities where you can explore and take part in several fun festivities with your furry friends. The UK has several dog-friendly bars, restaurants, and plenty of open green space to roam.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend away with your pet or you’re relocating to a UK city for new opportunities, it is important to consider pet-friendly accommodations.

Norfolk

If you’re in a summertime state of mind, you and your pups will enjoy the sandy coastlines of Norfolk. Norfolk is home to over 90 miles of spectacular beaches where your pets will have plenty of space to stretch their legs in the sand.

Yorkshire

In Yorkshire, you will find some of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes, coastlines, and dog-friendly finds. Around every corner you and your pup will find historic abbeys, grand castles, and classical gardens to explore. If you’re ever in the mood for coffee, you’ll want to stop by Salami & Co. in Otley, Yorkshire for a fun dog-friendly menu.

The Lake District

The Lake District is one of the UK’s most popular places to visit during holidays, and it is also a fantastic place to bring your furry friends. Many pubs, shops, and cafes extend a warm welcome to your pets. Whenever you find yourself in the Lake District, we recommend a Windermere Lake Cruise. Your dog gets to hop aboard the scenic cruise for FREE!

Brighton

Last but certainly not least, you will find plenty of clean, green, open space in Brighton. Brighton is rumored to have some of the most popular meet-up groups and events. You could time your visit to see some exciting pet-friendly events like Saltdean Lido Dog Swim,  or Paddle Dogs.

Summer is finally here! What better time is there to explore the great outdoors with your trusty four-legged friend?

Just like humans need a break from the intense summer heat, your dog does too. To keep your pup healthy, happy, and cool in this hot weather, we recommend you follow these few simple tips and tricks:

Don’t Leave Your Pet in the Vehicle

As tempting as it is to leave your dog in the passenger seat while you quickly run into the store, DON’T DO IT. Keeping your pet in your vehicle during the summer can be deadly. No matter how quick you think you will be, or even if you leave the A/C on or the windows rolled down, do not leave your pet in the car.

The temperature inside your car rises rapidly on summer days and can easily soar above 120 degrees inside when it’s only 85 degrees outside. It can be inconvenient to take your pup with you, but convenience is not worth risking the life of your furry friend.

Plan Your Exercise Accordingly

If you’ve ever been on an ill-timed midday hike in the summer, you understand how draining the heat can be. Simple exercises can feel much more challenging to sustain. Your dogs feel the same way.

Watch the weather forecast to identify when the best time to take your daily walks will be. Early mornings and evenings tend to have cooler temperatures and will make for a more pleasant outing. Waiting for the sun to go down also allows time for the asphalt to cool off so that your pet’s paws are less likely to be burned. Make sure to pack plenty of water to keep your dog hydrated and energized.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stroke

Dogs can quickly get heatstroke in elevated summer temperatures if not careful. You must keep an eye on your pup and watch for heatstroke symptoms. In particular, short-snouted dogs, new puppies, old dogs, or overweight dogs are especially susceptible to overheating.

Signs to Watch for Heat Stroke:

  • Heavy panting
  • Glazed eyes
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Excessive thirst
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Dizziness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Profuse salivation
  • Vomiting
  • Deep red or purple tongue
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness

Summer is for getting some Vitamin D and making fun memories with your pup. As long as you follow proper safety precautions, it’s the perfect time for pet travel. Try new hikes, visit the lake, or explore a park!

Whether you’re going on vacation, taking a business trip, or relocating altogether, if your plans include airline travel, you’ll have to make some extra arrangements for your furry friends. While we would like to have our pets comfortably tucked away in the seat right next to us in the cabin, unfortunately, that is not how it works. According to the rules established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), dogs and cats who travel by airplane must be confined to a carrier or crate space. A pet’s first flight in a crate can be a nerve-wracking experience for them as it is very different from the freedoms they felt while sticking their heads out of your car windows, so we’ve put together this guide to help you prepare your pets for travel as best as possible.

Step 1. Finding the Right Crate

From the tiniest Yorkie to the largest Great Dane, there is a crate to match pets of all shapes and sizes. Pets must be able to stand up, turn around comfortably, and have at least 3 inches above the top of their head when standing in a natural position. We’ve found that comfort starts with a good fit, so when it comes to your pet’s travel crate, you’ll want to bring out the measuring tape.

Step 2. Measure Your Pet

You will need 4 measurements to find the right size crate for shipping your pet:

Length of Body Have your pet stand against the wall and measure from the base of his tail to the tip of his nose the measurement you calculated in
Length of Leg Have your pet stand against the wall and measure from the floor to top of his elbow and divide this number by two
Width of Body Measure the width at the widest point, usually the shoulders and add 10 inches
Height of Pet Have your pet sit next to you and pinpoint the top of his head, or ears

how to measure pets for crates

Step 3. Crate Training

One of the best things you can do for your pet to prepare them for travel is to get them completely comfortable with their crate or carrier. We recommend finding the crate you’re going to use well ahead of your travel date and start by keeping the top half off. Initially, you can encourage your pet to rest in the bottom half and then eventually work your way up to enclosing it with the top piece and closing the door. Remember to give them time to accept the crate, and always use positive reinforcement to reward the good behaviors you see.

Step 4. Accessories for Comfortability

Airlines like to avoid as much crowing in the crate or carrier as possible, so stuffed animals, toys, clothing, and bones are typically not allowed by airlines. We recommend sticking these things in your carry-on to ensure a happy reunion when you’ve safely landed. Some travel carrier accessories that are required are:

– 2 plastic or metal cups for water and food should be attached to the carrier

– A clear plastic bag with dry food should be included for trips long enough that your pet will need to be fed

– A soft and absorbent pad or blanket at the bottom for comfort and accidents should also be included

Step 5. Find First Class Pet Transportation You Can Trust

Major airlines recommend hiring a pet transportation service to help with your travel arrangements. Most do not have the staff to help you understand all of the crate requirements for your pet’s travel, and that is where we can step in to help you.

Airpets America is here to help take the stress and difficulty out of relocating your furry friend. Our number one priority is the health, safety, and well-being of your pets, and that is why we work with the safest airlines and most qualified handlers.

We also carry a full-line of crates, custom crates, and modified crates that can be delivered directly to your front door.

Airlines Ban Emotional Support Animals

Gone are the days where you could fly freely with your emotional support animal, as most major airlines have recently implemented new federal rules and restrictions that no longer allow them to fly with you.

For years, airline passengers have complained about badly trained and poorly behaved pets that have been cleared to fly as certified emotional support animals, and the Department of Transportation finally cracked down on the issue.

Service Animal By Definition

By the Department of Transportation’s definition, a service animal is “a dog, regardless of breed or type, that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability.”

This new definition means that all emotional support animals in general – dogs, rabbits, reptiles, etc. – will no longer be allowed to fly without cost or a carrier.

What Has Changed For Airlines?

  • As of January 11th, airlines are no longer honoring new requests for emotional support animals.
  • These new regulations and definitions ultimately allow airlines to acknowledge emotional support animals as regular pets, as opposed to a trained service animal, meaning they can no longer fly at your feet.
  • The Department of Transportation also established new guidelines to limit the number of service animals that can be brought onboard the plane, to two.

What Has Changed For You?

Most major airlines have put these new rules into effect, meaning that your next travel arrangements with your emotional support animal will be affected.

  1. Only trained service dogs are being allowed to fly without charge and without being in a carrier.
  2. Airlines are focused on the training and behaviors of a dog, so doctor’s notes and letters are no longer being accepted.
  3. You must fill out a DOT form at least 48 hours before your flight to confirm your dog’s health, training, and behavior.
  4. If your pet starts to demonstrate any poor behaviors, airlines now reserve the right to treat it as a pet and you will be charged the appropriate fees.

Airpets America Can Assist

The way each airline is adopting and implementing these new policies varies across the industry, and it can ultimately become confusing and stressful as you begin making travel arrangements for yourself and your pet.

At Airpets America, we take all of the stress and complications out of relocating your emotional support animal. We have pet transportation experts with over 30 years of experience in relocating pets all over the world, so we know how to accommodate travel arrangements for all kinds of different pet breeds and locations.

We are airline and governmental experts, and we are well versed in these new rules and regulations for emotional support animals. Are you looking to relocate soon? Contact us to get started!

November 11th, Veterans Day, a day where we honor all of the courageous men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. We appreciate and respect the bravery that those serving in the military exude on a day to day basis. But did you know that up to 30% of American military veterans experience some form of mental disability or PTSD upon returning home from combat? It is even more disheartening to learn that of the 30% of people suffering, only 40% of those men and women are actively seeking help and other treatments.

Service Animals Save the Day

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, service animals are officially recognized as dogs that are trained to do work or perform everyday tasks for people with disabilities. Service animals are trained to do all kinds of physical tasks from things like guiding a blind person and retrieving items, to pulling a wheelchair. Service animals can also be trained to be more emotionally supportive of a person with PTSD and can guide them through a scary anxiety or panic attack.

For military veterans specifically, service animals have been shown to help them achieve an overall higher quality of life. Countless surveys and studies have reported that veterans utilizing the benefits of service animals have found that they experienced lower levels of depression and anxiety. Lower levels of anxiety and depression ultimately means fewer hospital visits, and an overall reduction in medical and therapeutic costs.

Looking for a Service Animal?

There are hundreds of organizations across the country that train and provide high-quality service dogs to disabled American veterans. Here are three of our favorites!

Patriot Paws

The mission of Patriot Paws is to help restore a veteran’s physical and emotional independence as much as possible through the use of a service animal. If you are interested in acquiring their services or even just interested in volunteering for them, you can contact them here.

The goal of America’s VetDogs is to help enhance a disabled veteran’s mobility and emotional independence and allow them to live a proud and self-reliant life. America’s VetDogs specialize in training animals that can help veterans suffering from physical injuries, PTSD, hearing and/or vision loss, and unexpected seizures. You can contact them here!

Want to hear the best part? All three of these organizations provide their services at little to no cost to veterans!

More than a Furry Friend

Dogs can be so much more than a furry friend when they are given the opportunity and proper training to become a certified service dog. If you think that you or someone you know would benefit from the capabilities of a service dog, do not hesitate to reach out to any of the organizations mentioned above or listed here

If you are ever in need of transportation for your service animal, give Airpets America a call. We specialize in domestic and international pet transportation and will take care of all the details ensuring your dog is cared for, just as they care for you.

Airpets America thanks and honors every military member for their courageous service!
